- Hello CyberVision users,
-
- I was finally going to buy the FastLane Z3, but when I called the few
- Amiga "shops" in Holland to check out the current prices, everyone told
- me that they didn't have one in stock. One even said that they weren't
- even manufactured anymore, while another said that they were build in
- small amounts and hard to get. (Which of these too is true? 'Cause I
- still want a fast SCSI Controller, like Fastlane & A4091 but they seem
- to have disappeared?)
-
- Anyway then I asked about the CyberVision64, which was also on my whish-
- list and I got the same response, not in stock, hard to get, short supply.
- Only one dealer had them in stock, so I immediately ordered one, not
- wanting to wait for weeks to get one from the other dealers.
- The next day it arrived, I unpacked it, read the manual and installed it.
- But now I have some questions that popped up when testing the board,
-
- I am completely new to grahics boards and I hope that you can/will answer
- my questions in very simple english, thanks!
-
- --------------------------------------------------------------------------
- My Hardware setup is:
-
- - A4000/040, 2 Chip & 8 FastMem.
- A3640 v3.1, Buster -11.
- - CyberVision64, 4Mb, S/N 81xxxxx.
- Supplied Software: Install Disk v2.13, v2.15 & PhotoGenics Lite.
- - Monitor used for testing:
- 17" YaKUMO PS1764 (= MAG ....) Monitor, Multi-scanning at horizontal
- frequencies of 30 kHz to 64 kHz, vertical frequencies of 50 Hz to
- 100 Hz.
- --------------------------------------------------------------------------
-
- 1. RESOLUTIONS/COLOUR DEPTHS:
- - I have bought the 4Mb version, but I can NOT open any 16 Bit screen,
- 1024x768 24 Bit screen and maybe also not the 1600x1200 8 Bit screen,
- but this last one I am not sure about if I could open it or not.
- Sure is the 16 Bit screens (2Mb) and the 24 Bit 1024x768 screen (4Mb).
- Why can I not open them?
- Do I have to update the software or is it a Hardware problem?
- Any solutions?
-
- - Is it normal if you switch screens, that the monitor "blanks" out
- for a second?
-
- - If I open a 800x600 24 Bit WB screen, the memory that I have left
- would be around 1.9 of 2 Chip Mem & 4.8 of 8 Fast Mem. Is this normal?
- I do have several Commodities running in the background, normally
- something around 1.5 Chip & 6.7 Fast is left.
-
- - Is it normal when you view a picture in its own screen 320x240(?) in
- any colour depth(?), that vertical lines appear and disappear (only in
- this resolution?)? Why does it happen?
-
- - Haven't tried it out yet, so how does it "work" if you want to have
- a 24-bit Workbench, start e.g. DPaint 5 in 8-bit CVScreen, and the
- Monitor has memory for the screen settings, is it just like switching
- screens, even if you switch resolutions? No more different than
- switching from a 8 colour WB to a 256 colour PageStream?
-
- - None of CV Resolotions/Colour Depths is video recordable/usable for
- Genlock? (But with the upcoming? video encoder it would be all usable?)
-
- - How are 32 Bit screens selectable (RGB-Alpha) and what use have they?
-
- 2. VIDEO MEMORY:
- - What exactly is the difference between the 2Mb and the 4Mb version?
- Only that the 4Mb version can also display the 1024x768 and 1280x1024
- in 24 Bit/16 Bit, or is the extra 2Mb used for something else too?
-
- - I read in a review of a prototype of the CyberVision64 that it's
- Memory could be expanded to 16 Mb. Is this true? The manual doesn't
- mention anything about that the memory could be expanded.
- If it's true, which memory chips can be used and can you check through
- software how many memory is on board?
-
- - By the way, should the memory on the board be "viewable" in Workbench
- as extra FastMem? 'Cause how can you tell how much memory you have
- other than checking out the chips.
- (You could open a specific resolution/colour depth screen, such as
- 1024x768 24 Bit, too see if you have 4Mb, but I cannot open such a
- screen even though I bought the 4Mb version and all the Memory Chip
- sockets do have memory chips in them. That's the reason I ask if it
- is checkable?)
-
- - And what use would the extra memory be?
- If you open a 800x600 24 Bit resolution screen +/- 2-4 Mb FastMem
- disappears for each new public screen, would the extra memory above
- the 4Mb stop this disappearing of FastMem and use the VideoMem instead?
- If not, and you truly want to multitask with several 24-bit screens
- open, you really should have a lot fast mem!?
-
- 3. PASS-THROUGH:
- - What is meant by "pass-through" Amiga Signal, how does it exactly work?
- Is the 30 cm long (incl. connectors) connector cable used for this
- purpose? Connect this in the VGA Adapter in the Amiga Video output and
- the CV64 Input connector.
- What do you really see happen on your multiscan monitor (30kHz+) if this
- connection is made and a standard Amiga Screen appears in the foreground.
- I don't quite understand what it is doing, and can not try it out for
- myself yet 'cause I haven't got the VGA Adapter by me.
-
- - What does the ScanDoubler/FlickerFixer do together with the CV64?
-
- 4. JUMPER SETTINGS:
- - Should the Jumper Settings as described in the manual really be
- set as in the manual, expect for JP1? 'Cause that is not how I got it.
- JP1 has open jumper, JP2 has no jumper, JP3 has 3 open jumpers, JP4 has
- 3 closed jumpers, JP5 has 3 closed jumpers, CON2a has no jumpers, CON2b
- has no jumpers and CON3 has no jumpers!
-
- - What exactly does JP3 & JP4 do?
-
- - What are the best jumper settings for my setup, and what does 'open'
- in the manual mean? E.g. JP1 - Slow Buster Mode -> open = on, but in
- my situation should be off = closed!?
-
- Open: --- jumper with Closed: --- the 2 pins
- | | 2 holes over | | | in the 2 holes
- | | | 1 pin!? |---| of the jumper!?
- |---| | | |
- | | | ---
- ---
-
- 5. SOFTWARE/UPDATES/SUPPORT/DRIVERS/BENCHMARKS:
- - What is the latest software version for CV64 and where is it avai-
- lable?
-
- - How are updates handled, are they send to you, do you have to visit
- their BBS (are they preparing a Web Page/FTP Site for support/updates?).
- Is the software for CV64 different from CyberGraphX for the other
- graphic boards or is it the same but with extra files for the other
- boards and you can use those updates as well, but with the CyberVision
- Monitor File?
-
- - Is there somewhere a list available that lists the programs that
- support the CV64 directly (through drivers?), the programs that work
- 100% in CV-Screens, programs that are not 100% on CV-Screens (Screen
- corruptions) and programs that don't work on CyberVision?
-
- - In the manual it is mentioned that there are drivers for AMax IV,
- XIPaint and more importantly SCALA and others (what others? Does
- LightWave have a 24 bit Driver?) to use them in high colour depths
- (even 24 Bit?), but where are they? They were not included on disk.
-
- - Which Benchmark programs can you use to test the speed of the board?
-
- - Could someone expain exactly how the Enviroment Variables & CVMode
- work and settings I should use for optimal (faster?) use and how do
- you set these env variables after installation?
- How come Planes2Fast, NoPassThrough & KeepAmigaVideo aren't set at
- installation time?
-
- - In another review it said that if you wanted to speed up the "memory-
- handling" you can use the 'SetCVisionValues', where is this command?
- Is it advisable to use this function or is this similar to overclocking
- cpu's?
-
- 6. PLANAR-TO-CHUNKY:
- - Planar-To-Chunky-Pixel Converter in Hardware, what exactly is this
- used for?
-
- - In the prototype review it was mentioned that the software did not
- support this Converter yet, as of which software version is it
- supported?
-
- 7. EXPANDABILITY:
- - In their german ads they mentioned Digital VideoBus for possible
- expansions and a Connector for Video-Encoder with FBAS/S-VHS Output,
- what/where are they?
-
- - Is Phase5 developing any additional cards for the expansion bus
- (= Digital Videobus?), like the JPEG/MPEG Card mentioned in the manual?
- Is this maybe the same as the 2-GO! Project that they advertised in
- the german magazines?
- What happened too it, in their new ads it isn't mentioned anymore,
- neither is the FastLane! (BTW Does MicroniK, Germany still have
- FastLane's, as they still mention them in their ads?)
-
- - Is it really true that the FastLane Z3 isn't manufactured anymore
- and could the 2-GO! (Z3, DSP, RISC MultiMedia board) project of Phase5
- really be the same as the PowerUp (RISC) Board that suddenly appeared
- from them?
-
- 8. MONITORS:
- - What does the on-board electronic Monitor switcher do?
- - Any good recomendations for good value 17" Monitors, how about this
- MAG/YaKUMO Monitor or CTX, Sony, Liyama 8617E/Pro 9017E, Daytek/Daewoo,
- ADI, NEC Monitors and any others?
-
- Well that's it for now, please respond to my E-Mail adresse as I only
- check these newsgroups out once a week and than I would miss the responses.
- Any other comments or advice about the CyberVision64 is also very welcome!
- Many thanks in advance for your time and trouble.
